Remix of Identity 8

The Rovinj bitinadas are unique interpretations in which one or more soloists sing a melody accompanied by a group of bitinadurs who imitate the sounds of musical instruments with their voices, mainly plucked instruments such as the guitar, mandolin and double bass, and this is because in the past it was sung while working, so they hands were "busy". At the initiative of the Italian community "Pino Budicin", Rovinj bitinadas were included in the Register of Protected Intangible Cultural Assets of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia as "vocal music type of the Italian community in the cultural space of the city of Rovinj". The following songs were chosen for the "Identity Remix 8" contest: "E guarda già da secoli", "I muratori", "La muièru maladìta" and "La sarturela", because they are easy to perform in bitinada and, considering the fact that the author is unknown, we wanted to emphasize the genius of popular creativity. These songs were recorded in 2017 and are on the seventieth anniversary album "Gèri, ancùi, dumàn..." by KUD "Marco Garbin".

The song "E guarda già da secoli", better known by the title "Che orchestra, fiòi, che musica", was most likely composed at the beginning of the 20th century. The people of Rovinj loved it immediately and it entered the bitinada repertoire with small variations of harmonic elements, i.e. simplifying the harmony. With the soloist Alessio Giuricin in this performance, the song tells about the beauty of the city of Rovinj-Rovigno and the uniqueness of its inhabitants and their crafts.

"I muratori" is a typical song from nearby regions. In the area of Rovinj, this song is sung by women in the form of a street melody (Italian: ària da cuntràda) in thirds, but the bitinada accompaniment is often added. The song tells about the craft of masons and their qualities, and the soloists in this performance are the women's choir of the KUD "Marco Garbin".

"La muièru maladìta" is a very amusing ironic song by an unknown author, easily performed in bitinada form as a slow march and with an obligatory bass phrase. The song describes a "damned wife" and her behaviour towards her husband. The chorus he sings always says, "If I complain I'm mean, I'm a monster without a heart, but when she beats with her hips I really sweat," suggesting that everything is resolved in bed afterwards. The soloist in this performance is Alessio Giuricin.

The song "La sarturela" was certainly created in the area of Trieste (it is possible that it has a similar origin as "Tu non vedi che l'albero pende"). A story about a young man's love affair with an older woman, but without luck. It is easy to follow in bitinada, and has a strong visual effect on the audience when it is performed, if all of the text is interpreted well. The soloists in this performance are Marisa Poretti and Angela Preden.
